Run commands

If you are asking about the number of commands that can be run from the run option of the start menu. That depends on how many programs are installed on your system.

So, the answer is nearly unlimited.
To provide a list, we would need to know alot of details about your system.

You can generate a basic list from Windows Explorer.
With the root folder selected, click on tools, find, or the search button.
Search for *.exe and *.com
This will give you a list of all executable programs on your system.
Not all of these will run properly from the run box. But it will help you understand why we can't give you a detailed list in the limited space of this forum.

I guess then I just need a basic list of the more common commands and what they do. I have Windows 98(standard) on an HP Pavillion computer. I can look up all the *.exe and *.com programs, but I need to know what some of them do.

The Run option in your start menu really doesn't do anything that you can't do through Windows Explorer or your normal Start menu. For example, to start the disk defragmenter, you Select Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Or you can open up the Run window, and tell Windows to execute DEFRAG.EXE. The Run window will also allow you access to programs like MSCONFIG.EXE which Windows does not provide direct access to (you have to access it via another system tool).

As stated in Answer 1, the number of programs you can execute is limited only by the number of program you have installed on your computer.

Hope this helps!
