Run Scheduled Backups Unattended, Win98

By ggarman ·
On a small peer network running win98 se I would like the scheduler to start the backups at night unattended. The backup program provided with Win98 se starts but someone has to be there to push the start button.

Unfortunatly, you will not be able to use the provided backup scheduler in Windows 98. The scheduler will only start the backup utility not the backup process. I would suggest purchasing a backup solution such as Veritas Backup Exec for Windows. This not only provides unattended backups but will provide other useful tools such as reports and enhanced backup tools.

The previous poster is absolutely correct. W98 B/U is not automated. Never fear, your backups can be done with a batch file, which CAN be added to your scheduler. XCOPY is the command, and this is a small example:

Echo off
rem Updates MY DATA from MyMachine to PeerMachine with the following parameters:
rem ?RickBack? on PeerMachine is mapped as Drive --U--
if exist U:\Databack\nul goto NEXT
echo Network drive U: does not exist, Aborting job. >> C:TRANSFER.TXT
goto END
:NEXT
u:
cd\Databack
c:
cdxcopy c:\batch\*.* u:batch /i /e /r /y /m /f >> C:\batch\databack\TRANSFER.TXT
xcopy c:\exchange\*.* u:Exchange /i /e /r /y /m /f >> C:\batch\databack\TRANSFER.TXT
xcopy c:\WINDOWS\Favorites\*.* u:WINDOWS\Favorites /i /e /r /y /m /f >> C:\batch\databack\TRANSFER.TXT
xcopy "c:\My Documents\*.*" "u:My Documents\*.*" /i /e /r /y /m /f >> C:\batch\databack\TRANSFER.TXT
:END
