Running 2 Primary DNS Server on 1 Domain

By steffeno ·
Network setup is as below:
- NT 4 Domain with PDC over WAN link and a BDC locally.
- NT 4 DNS Server setup locally.
- Recently purchased of Win2k Server. Join current NT 4 Domain.
- My Senior Colleague told me to setup a DNS on the Win2k Server. Told me to put in the same host records as the NT 4 DNS. And configured as a Primary Server.

My question is, is there any implication on running 2 DNS(1 NT 4 and 1 Win2k DNS) server as a primary server in 1 domain?

I have never tried this before - but if your Windows 2000 server is not set in Native mode, and if the DNS server replicate with each other (as they are on the same domain) it should work; but having a NT PDC and a W2k DC is what I would be most worried about being buggy. It seems unecessarily complex to me but I might not be seeing the big picture here.

Firstly, just to clarify one thing is that
- NT 4 PDC is over WAN Link
- NT 4 BDC is local
- 2 NT 4 member servers(1 exchange 5.5 and 1 file and print server)
- 2 Win2k member servers(1 exchange 5.5 and 1 file and print server)

Secondly, I was thinking that running 2 primary DNS server with the same zone information might cause name resolution problems. There are issues now that some of XP clients machine, takes quite sometimes to logon, loading your personal settings takes forever(3-4 Minutes). And access to network shares is taking a while when you first logon.
