running a laptop from external drive

By k.goodrich ·
I was wondering if it is possiable to run a laptop using a external drive. I have collected several laptops in need of repair and would like to be able to power them up and use my pc's system to work on them. I ask because people have taken their hard drives before giving me the units. It would be nice to hook up the laptop and work on the unit and then buying a proper hard drive. Thanks in advanced for any help

Yes it's possible to use an External HDD with a NB but this will not work

The reason is because you are attempting to boot off a Windows Platform and this is not transferable across different hardware.

If you just want to test the NB's out use a Live Linux and boot off the CD. This will allow you to test the hardware and see if it works well enough for your needs.

If you wanted to run off a External HDD you would need to install Windows to each computer and run it off the external HDD if that particular computer supports Booting off a USB Device. If it doesn't them you can not boot off an external HDD.
