Running Sharepoint (wss 3.o) and static HTML on the same site

By roblansky ·
I am rusty in technology after spending many years in management. I am trying to run my web site and a windows sharepoint blog on the same computer / external ip on port 8080. I first build a regular HTML site in IIS (Windows 2003 server) and everything works fine. Then I install WSS (i.e. create an application in my existing site) and the site static html functionality breaks, because WSS is trying to handle the requests. I tried removing (root) from WSS managed paths, it still doesn't work because web.config has explicit handling instructions.

If create a subfolder, everything there works fine because wss doesn't know about it, but then I cannot redirect index.html to the subfolder because index.html in root is handled by wss. I I have spent a week trying to figure this out and I am at my wits end. Please help.
