Running windows update in a domain

    by mcse75 ·

I am trying to find a way to keep our workstations current using windows update.

Our current security configuration requires that an administrator log into each workstation and run windows update. with 75 stations this is very time consuming. Is there a way to do this automatically via group policies etc. We do not have any software such as SMS to automate the process

I don’t want to give the users the ability to install any other software, only windows updates.

    Thanks for your help

Look into Microsoft Software Update Services

Our company uses Windows Updates (under Control Panel). We schedule on each machine during setup. When a restricted user is logged in, they only see the message when the updates are finished loading, asking them to reboot. Has worked well for 200+ PCs.

In Group Policy, click Computer Configuration, click Administrative Templates, click Windows Components, and then click Windows Update.
In the details pane, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location, supply the name of the internal server to function as the update server, and supply the name of the server to store upload statistics.
      Click Enabled.
