!'s filling screen

By mwood ·
I believe my pc has a virus. !'s fill the screen. Then when it is booting Lines ( ||| ||| )fill the screen and then are replaced with the !'s and some of the alpha characters in the text are wrong. If left alone, it continually cycles through rebooting, but never loads all the way.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Three important questions:

1. Which OS are you using?
2. What type of Hardware do you have?
3. What post messages do you see if any before the OS load?

It is an HP workstation x2100 running XP Pro.
I'm not at the computer now, but I don't remember any special messages, just the text I always see with some of the letters wrong and with !'s all over the screen.

I beleive you're right when you say that your PC got a virus. When it's up to that point there's nothing you can do from your PC (it doesn't start so...). But you can try something like taking you harddrive out and putting it into another computer (with a good anti virus program I'd suggest and try to find out from there (like scan the drive and eventually reinstall windows)
In my experience it would also be nice to have a anti spyware program at the same time. Often trig some trojans for the anti virus to remove.

There is a small chance that your 3D or 2D graphics card has a problem. If you have a spare PCI graphics card, you could try it first.
