SA Support and EU Privacy Laws

By ray.smith.30533 ·
From the U.S. I need to provide SA support for Wintel Servers located in the UK. I am being told that due to privacy laws this is not possible. Are there any tools, software or hardware that would enable us to do SA support and still be compliant with EU laws?

It's not a question of tools

It's EU law. Those whose servers you are to maintain are not allowed to expose the data they have on individuals without a similar enforcement of privacy, which in many cases there isn't. It's not a blanket thing though it depends on what data it is.
It's a funny one, I remeber signing on with PayPal and being told that I had to agree that the registration data would not be covered under the data protection act, because it was hosted in the US, yet we as a company use US hosts for some of our customer data.
So it all depends on what you would have access to, via the necessary permissions you'd need to fulfill the contract.
Can't help you further than that, just like your lawyers our's have a passion for ambiguity and obfuscation so they can keep their jobs.

Thanks Tony - Your comment is consistent with what I am being told. I just wonder how businesses in EU can outsource server administration to places like India and remain compliant.
