Safe Mode

By kirabo ·
At home I have a virtual PC running
microsoft 98, on a Power G4 with mac OS
9.0.4, recently I tried to down load and
install Java (the MRJ install and and SDK
install). I then tried to install it and part of
the instruction was to set the path for the
jdk 1.3 in thr autoexec.bat, however i first
tried to set through the command prompt
and not the H-Key as I should have done.
The consequence is that I am struck in
the safe mode and don't know how to get
out, will not start on any other mode than
the safe mode although I do get the 6
choices ( tried unsucessfullyto make a
bootlog.txt). Have checked the devices
and nothing has an exclamation mark,
only that in the safe mode, the PC
wouldn't recognise the cd-rom drive (
which has no problems when using the
mac). Anyway to get out of this mess.

Go to www.microsoft.com and search for regclean. It is a program from Microsoft that will attempt to correct issues in the registry. Whether it will fix yours or not, I don't know. I have used it successfully on others.
Another such utility is partof Ontrack's Fix-it Utilities. This is also a registry cleaner, in fact a lot better one, but you have to buy it.
Good Luck!!!

Hi there.. RegClean 4.1a is a good idea, you can read about it and download it via: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q147/7/69.asp There is also another good registry cleaner that is free, you can find it via:http://www.bootdisk.com/genfiles/eclea1_7.exe Good Luck!

While in safe mode, attempt to run the "MSCONFIG" utility.
This can be run from the "RUN" utility on the start menu....
Click "start" choose "Run" and type "MSCONFIG" in the run window, and press enter

You may then be able to eliminate lines from your startup file"Autoexec.bat" one line at a time, restarting each time until you find the offending line.
This will take some patience, restarting windows after each change is made to see what has been causing the problem.
Good luck !!!

Another common cause for continuous safe mode startup would be using real mode device drivers...especially regarding the disk drives. I'm not sure how this would work on a MAC in Virtual windows, but hey...we are eliminating possibilities as we go...

This can be checked in computer properties-performance.
Rt. Click on "My Computer", select properties, and choose the "performance" tab.
Select the "file system" button, and choose troubleshooting...
None of these boxes should have check marks in them...

if this ain't it, well, keep pluggin away...

Good luck

If you can get to a dos prompt, virtual or otherwise, at bootup do so!
1) At the prompt, run scanreg.
2) You should see a screen that gives a couple of options. What you are looking for is an option to restore!
3) Selecting this option will show you a list of previously saved registries. Select the one dated before the date that you made the changes to your system, that threw you into safemode.
4) Re-boot your system or virtual machine!

This may or may not work for you! If you do not have any saved registries for scanreg to work with, then it's no good!

Hope this is of some use. I would like to know!

Jerry
