Safe mode loop, unable to boot system

By vicjohnson ·
I have a laptop that comes up to the safe mode screen when turned on. Regardless of which option I select, it starts bringing up the black windows XP screen then shuts down and goes back to the safe mode screen. No options work. If I try to start when pressing F8, I get the same result. I created XP boot floppys but get an error when trying to boot. How can I get this machine up and running? I have some important files I need to recover before I drop it from a tall building.

boot system

by Sue T In reply to Safe mode loop, unable to ...

You have a couple of options. Did you try repairing the Boot.ini file? Sometimes it is as easy as that. You could boot to the XP CD and do a repair or even install over top of the current installation. You could boot to the command line and try a system restore to a time it did work. You could boot to a Knoppix CD or another Distro and then copy the files you need. You could slave this hard drive in another computer to retrieve your files. Maybe you have a piece of hardware that is going bad or a bad driver. Scan for viruses and spyware.Good Luck.

Same problem

by jimmytsang In reply to boot system

Recently I have bought a new motherboard and I put my old hard drive on it.
I can get into my XP desktop at the very beginning then after I restart the computer.
It prompted with Safe mode option and no matter what I choose it will restart and loop back to the safe mode option.
Any idea how I can overcome this, without format my hard drive?

Cheers

multiple fixes didn't work

by wbaer In reply to boot system

Unable to boot into safet mode
Unable to boot from original program CD
Unable to use system restore as it was disabled some time ago
Got a blue screen..UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If I could get the C prompt to come up I think I could use a command to fix the problem.
Finally, I tried using the MS fix (downloading 6 start-up disc) but the first
disc does not start up PC.
My BIOS is set to boot properly, A drive, then two different cd and DVd drives..still
looking if you have any other ideas. Thanks Walt
