"Safely remove Hardware" icon problem

By trilok_bhatt80 ·
I have winxp sp2 installed laptop. When i plug pen drive "Safely remove Hardware" icon not appeared in the system tray. I had also run the command C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll but still no icon appeared. I noticed one thing that if i configure my lan card in DHCP its works but after configuring manual ip address its disappears again. I had already reinstalled the lan drivers but the problem is same.

re: Safely Remove

While the tips posted by PT above 'should' work, I once had the same problem where none of the tips published would work. The only way to get the icon back was to re-image the drive (or save docs, wipe and reinstall) and start over. The problem never returned on that particular computer.

Check this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883517/en-us

Also try this:
With the pen drive plugged in, go to the Device Manager. Find the pen drive in the tree (under Disk Drives)and double-click it. Click the Policies tab. If Optimize for Quick Removal is checked, you wont get the Safely Remove Hardware icon all the time. Windows writes to the drive immediately, so you can unplug it at will. I use this option, but sometimes Safely Remove still shows up.
