    hi all

    I have downloaded a samba-2.2.8a-1.i386.rpm file and
tried to install it on my desktop but it gives me an
    error installing package message.

I did change the file permissions from 600 to 765 and still I couldn’t manage to install.
can somebody kindly assist me as I am new user of linux. thanks

It just gives a window with an ERROR INSTALLING PACKAGE message with OK Button and no further option.I tried using man install pages but could’t get it right.

I believe the samba-2.2.8a-1.i386.rpm is just an update package. Do you have samba installed already? If not download the full version then apply the 2.2.8a update.

I know this is sorta an outdated thing, but maybe d/l the source, ./configure and make? Things tend to work better for me that way anyway 😉

Try installing samba from the Redhat 8 installation CDs. If you have access to the Red Hat Network (RHN), try that, it’ll be even easier. The point here is that the Redhat-built RPMs should “just work” without any hassles. Then you can concentrate on configuring samba. Don’t forget about SWAT (http://localhost:901)!
