SAMBA & MSOffice ReadOnly Files

By bjastles ·
A constant and annoying problem that keeps on cropping up is that when someone opens a MSOffice document on any samba share the document becomes read-only. I have tried everything short of compromising security nothing has worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Although the file is marked Read-Only, it is not.

I believe that Microsoft has a supported hot fix to resolve this issue. I know for certain that is also occurred with Unix and Novell and there are hot fixes for those platforms.

Call Microsoft Support.

Read only for everyone?

I have seen Samba change the permissions to that of the user last in the file.

Is it read only for even that user?

Check the file permissions on the server, as well as the owner and group. while your at it, check the permissions on the directory the files are in.

The other thing to look at is the umask for the users. often this is set to make the file exclusively theirs, so you need to change this so that it adds GROUP permissions as well, and them add users to the groups that they need.

The other thing that happens, if someone else has that file open, everyone else will get it as read-only. Make sure people aren't opening the file and leaving it open.

example from the samba configuration file:
[documents]
comment = Information
path = *******
writable = yes
read only = no
force group = info
create mode = 775
directory mode = 775
security mask = 0777
force security mode = 0
directory security mask = 0777
force directory security mode = 0
