San Disk USB Mini-Drive not Recognized by XP

By natcamz ·
I have a SanDisk ImageMate Flash Card Reader SDDR-05 which I was told XP should already contain the driver. The trouble is that my computer doesn't recognize any such driver under the Wizard Install and SanDisk doesn't offer any for XP since it is already supposed to have one. It turns up as a yellow question mark under the Device Manager which I end up always uninstalling. Any suggestions?

Disk Management

What does it look like under disk management, could be a drive letter conflict.
If it is assigned a drive letter then change it to any other unassigned one by right clicking on the removable media/change.

What level of service pack are you at in XP?

Is this a used reader?

Check/remove any hidden instances of that device

By default Device Manager only shows CONNECTED devices. Check for/uninstall all instances of this device(including "ghost" left by prior install)

1. To have Device Manager show "ghost" devices look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539

2. The SanDisk should be REMOVED. Start Device Manager. Click View->Show Hidden Devices. Devices with semi-transparent icons are "ghost" instances of a device

3. Look for any ghosts of the SanDisk and uninstall any you see. (And be sure expand everything under USB) Don't uninstall anything you're not sure of

4. When done click Action->Scan For Hardware Changes just to make sure nothing is refreshed/reappears

5. Try re-insert/re-install the SanDisk. Plug into a usb port on your computer (not a USB hub to make sure hub isn't problem either)

6. Any luck? If still problem, rt click on the device (with the question mark) select Properties. Click Detail tab. And report the device instance id that appears.
