SATA Drive and defraging lost everything… Twice!

by michaeltech . Updated 19 years, 6 months ago

Here is the deal. My brother has a gateway with SATA. My setups that I work daily with are all till IDE. I have done trhis hundreds of time and no problems on these machines. Both time I did this to my brothers machine I lost everything. I did a tuneup/cleanup Imade sure all updates to windows and other programs were done. Did a full system scan with virus scanner. Then ran several spyware scanners and also antirootkit. I then deleted temps and winupdate KB* folders. and then did a registry scan and repair. Rebooting several times. Finally the last thing I did was a defragment. Machine had booted fine before this.

I do the defrag and everything is fine but then next day I go to use it and try and wake and nothing. I reboot and machine starts to load windows I get the XP screen and then I get a really quick Blue screen and the machine goes and reboots and this happens allover again and It gets stuck in this cycle. I then try booting and last known good config, and Safe modes. same thing. I load recovery consloe from cd and I can get a c prompt but do a dir and I get an error msg. I try to do a fixmbr and a fixboot and still nothing. disk is totally corrupted.

This has happened to me twice on this machine. I have done this hundreds of time to other machines and no problems. they were all IDE machines and this is the only SATA machine that I have done this to. Also this was a different drive the first time this happened I did a replacement of the drive after the drive corrupted thinking it was the drive.

What gives here?

Michael
