SATA drive bad sector - Restore data

By jparas ·
SATA drive took a dump the day I decided to back it up. Go figure. It stored important data that I need to desperately recover. I could not boot from it as it seems as though the sector that went bad housed the windows system files. A few options I am looking into.
1. Connect an IDE drive and set the BIOS to boot from it as primary? WIth this, will it still see the SATA drive so I can pull data from?
2. Replace the old SATA drive, install OS and use that. Restore the files from the SATA drive by purchasing a SATA/IDE case to USB ?
3. Use the external drive I've got (was going to serve as the back up drive) install XP and set the BIOS to boot from it ?

Already tried the Chkdsk /r route to no avail.
Stops @ 25% with unrecoverable problems message. Couldnt even run a 'dir' command much less 'copy' to try and pull data to the external drive.

Certainly appreciate the time and thanks ahead!
