SATA Drive size limits on Dell SC420 Server?

By robo_dev ·
My old Dell SC420 needs more disk space.

When it was made, the largest SATA drive they offered was 250GB for that machine. I was looking at adding a pair of 1TB SATA drives.

I know there used to be all sorts of issues with larger PATA drives not being recognized properly....is this a likely problem with this new-ish (2005) Dell server?

I would assume that all SATA interfaces are alike? The server has two SATA 150 ports on the mobo. (SATA 1.0 1.5 GBs).

So if I get a SATA 3 or even SATA 6 drive, it will work,no? (Obviously won't get same throughput).

Should work but did you check the manual?

Hi
I do not see any problem with connecting larger hdds. SATA (150,300, 600) controllers support "48-bit LBA" that limits the disk size up in the petabyte region
i would recommend you check the manual for supported drive sizes
manual can be found here.

i would make sure you had the newest bios rev on it as well.

Shouldn't be a real problem

Provided you are not looking at using drives larger than 2 TB.

You can have issues with the 3 TB Drives and some OS like XP as well.

But as said above make sure that you have the newest BIOS installed and it should be OK.
