SATA Hard drive setup

By byteside ·
I bought two Segate 120 gig SATA hard drives and would like to set up a server for myself. I have never worked with SATA so do not know what to do. Can I install a IDE drive with OS on it as boot drive and use the two SATA drives as storage drives? I am reading alot about setting up raid 0 on different sites but dont quite understand the whole thing. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction. I am not sure how to set this up. I would like to use one of the 120 SATA drives as a backup. Is that posible?

First, I assume that your motherboard has SATA compatibility, or you have a SATA controller card.

With either setup, you can set the boot sequence in BIOS setup to boot off of your existing IDE controller.

Now, does the SATA controller that you have support RAID?
Look in either the manual, or on the driver disk for a RAID setup utility.

RAID level 0 is a striped array. That is, all disks in the array look like a single disk to the system.

RAID level 1 is mirroring. That is, the second disk is a copy of the data of the first disk in the RAID array.
