saving local settings in roaming profile

By fpost ·
We are running an application that saves information to the local settings folder, which must be included in the roaming profile when it is saved back up to the network. Does anyone know how we can do this?

Thanks.

Ok, what crack are you on?

On a ROAMING PROFILE, the local settings are saved with the users profile!

Here?s how roaming profile is working:
Account name ?Bobby
Bobby roaming profile path is \\servername\profiles\bobby
When Bobby login on a workstation at first time his profile will be created on the local workstation. If bobby changed settings in his profile (example he setup Outlook) this changes will only affect his local profile until he logged off or reboot his PC. So the profiles synchronization only occurs when user is login off\on. The profile is download at login and upload at logoff.

So in your case if your application really write information in the local profile the only way to get it on the server is the ask the user to logoff. This is simple as that.

I'm quite familiar with how profiles work, and what they are for. My question deals specifically with the "Local Settings" folder within the roaming profile, which by default is omitted by the logoff process when uploading the profile back to the server. Local settings, temp, temporary internet folders and one other folder that escapes me are not saved. I need to modify how this works, and have the "local settings" folder written back to the server share where the roaming profile is saved.

If you're an expert with roaming profiles and have run into this in the past, I'd love to hear if/how you solved it.

Thanks.

ANYTHING SAVED IN THE LOCAL SETTINGS FOLDER IS SAVED WHEREVER THE ROAMING PROFILE IS WHEN YOU LOG OFF OF THAT PC.

Once again, I ask what crack you are on?

In response to this, the only FOLDER roaming profiles do not convert / transport is the LOCAL SETTINGS FOLDER.

THE ONLY WAY for you to get the same "LOCAL SETTINGS" for your program is to INSTALL THAT PROGRAM on each pc required. LOCAL SETTINGS are just that... LOCAL. Has something to do with the REGISTRY and all that. You will NEVER be able to remotely copy those settings to another PC. You must install the program on the pc with the settings you require.

Everything else in the profile will move:

program items
screen colours
network connections
printer connections
mouse settings
window size and position
desktop settings
IE favorites and cookies
shortcuts
My Documents folder on the C: disk
Temporary Internet Files
Recent

Check out these links, which further state which folders aren't retained as the user logs off;

http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/cs/win2k-deploy/roaming.html (in the section starting with "the following are not stored remotely")

http://defoenet.com/MCSE/userprofiles.shtml (in the section titled "Roaming Profiles" where it says "by default the folders...do not roam with the user)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/centers/management/manage_faq.mspx#top (in the "Roaming profiles" section, question #2)

Now are you able to help? If not, stop taking your own crack and do your homework.

The following registry key contains the folders that are excluded by default. You could try removing the local settings entry from this key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ExcludeProfileDirs

This is not something I have tried and would recommend thorough testing before implementation but it may offer a simple solution to your issue.

The following link may offer a little more clarification. http://www.jsiinc.com/subh/tip3500/rh3543.htm
