Saving/Printing docs over the network

By ap5 ·
I have two NT 4 workstations that periodically experience problems with saving or printing Word documents. It's either the latest changes are not saved or when trying to print, only part of the document comes out on the page, the rest being blank.A second attempt usually work fine though.

These two machines are in close proximity to each other, and the first thing I tried was to replace the cables. But these intermmittent problems are still happening.

What else can I test for to help isolate the problem? I guess it could be NIC related, but I am not sure how to accurately test it. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Have you looked at the location of these two workstations? I gather that the rest of the network is fine? Are the cables from these two going anywhere near electro-magnetic interference os some kind, be it lights or a motor or some magnetic device (stereo speakers). Waht about the nic cards? Are they perhaps 10mbps while the rest of the network is using 10/100 mbps cards?
Good luck!

Mike

Hi.

Are these two machines hanging off the same hub/switch? If so, try swapping the hub/switch or plugging them into a different one. If there are other users on the hub/switch that are not being affected, then just try swapping the ports which these 2 are currently using. The ports they are currently using could be intermittently faulty.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Try to change the printer's resolution. Go to printer - properties - Device setting - Resolution and change it to 300 dots per inch (if you are using 1200dpi change to 600 dpi). The document created in the 600 dpi resolution is 4 times bigger than in the 300 dpi resolution.
Check also the spooling file, the page protection and the memory settings.

With regards to the printing, check the printer settings in Word and ensure that under spooling, you check spool entire document. This will resolve issues with multiple machines attempting to print at the same time, and clarify if there's a problemwith the printer.

With regards to saving the documents, are you saving manually, or allowing Word to AutoSave?

Just a couple of ideas to look for...hope ya figure it out..

1. Get your virus definition files updated and scan these systems thoroghly; this is behavior befitting infection.

2. Start troubleshooting problems like these by looking into ALL commonalities between the systems... Just because these machines are near one another doesn't rule out problems with MS Word. Is there any consistency to the problem? (If each of them tries to print/save the same document, do they exhibit the same symptoms?)
