I am not sure exactly what you want. However this site has information on making boot disk for all operating systems. You can also make a start up disk in Windows itself.

Hi Michael,

If you are referring to the installation specific settings and system files, you need the following;

USER.DAT,
SYSTEM.DAT,
SYSTEM.INI,
WIN.INI

For W98, I would also back up autoexec.bat

Some files are in the root C:
Others are in the Windows folders
C:\Windows\System

There is a problem backing the .dat files from DOS. They can be over 8MB in size.

You will either need a DOS capable tape drive, or a DOS version of a zip file manager.

You could also stickin a small hard drive, and copy the files over to it.

Use the DOS copy command to copy the files you need.

Copy C:\autoexec.bat A:\autoexec.bat
copy C:\Windows\system\*.ini a:\*.ini

Many .ini files in the Windows folders are part of program specific data, or device drivers.

I often back up ALL files that are of a different date than the operating system files.
(For W98SE, I think the date is 4/??/1999)

Chas
