Saving *.wab files

By Bob7402 ·
Comments: Refer to your 01/07/02 Outlook Tips article on WAB's,PAB's and CAB's. How does one save a *.WAB file in such a way that it can be re-installed after a reformat/reinstall of Windows and Outlook Express? I recently went through the reinstall process and tried to add my old windows address book file, but the program would not accept it. Also, is there anyway of reinstalling the previous email folders with their contents?

Thank you for your help.

I have always played the name game. I save the file with one name and then after reinstall I check system to find the current file (WAB, PAB, PST, etc). I delete it and install my old file to the same place with the same name. I usually test my backup file before scratching the drive just to be sure it is good.
Good luck!

One way to restore email settings is to copy the Outlook Express folder. Depending on which OS you are running, the folder will be in a different location. Windows 98 will have it in C:\windows\application data\Microsoft\(profile number)\Outlook Express. This folder will contain the Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx, etc. Copy this folder to another drive. Then once Outlook Express is installed with the same user name, an import of mail account settings can be done from within Outlook Express. Go to File Import/Export and chose mail account settings. Then browse to the saved folder. You may also be able to paste the folder into the directory. Also for the WAB, try to export the address book to a CSV file and import it to the new install.
