saving xp desktop

Is there a way of saving my pc's desktop before reformatting the hard drive? I would like to have all my desktop shortcuts the same.

If you are reformatting the hard drive you will have to reload your OS and Applications which in turn should re-create all your shortcuts. If desktop shortcuts were saved and reloaded with the programs behind they would not work in any case?

If you insert the XP disk. On the main setup/install menu there is an option 'Additional Tasks' Select this and on the new menu select 'Transfer files and settings' This will move your requirements onto a cd or something.

When you have formatted the disk simply use the same wizard to import the settings back. Remember to try it out before you format the hd by changing your desktop and using the import wizard.

Hope this helps

Your desktop icons will be in two places:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

C:\Documents and Settings\[Your User ID]\Desktop

The All Users desktop are icons that everyone logging into your computer see. The ones on your desktop are ones taht you added separatly. When you log in you see the culmination of boh desktops.
