SBS 2003 R2 RAS VPN blocks Internet access

By christopherfranks ·
The SBS 2003 R2 server is running an on-demand VPN to Server 2003 in a branch office using RAS at either end (2 x NICS on SBS firewall).

Everything is fine between the offices as data can pass.

Connection to Remote access and OWA over the Internet to the SBS server is initially fine whilst the VPN is running and can remain so for hours.

Suddenly it is no longer possible to contact the SBS via Remote access or OWA and it is necessary to terminate the VPN at the branch office for the Remote Access and OWA to work again.

Once the VPN is reset everything works well again for a few more hours.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

RRAS does have a connection time limit.

RRAS will disconnect sessions that are idle.

To change this behavior you have to modify a users remote access session limits in the user account in Active Directory.
