SBS exchange server not sending

By tahoerogue ·
I am looking into an issue on a SBS exchange server and I am not familiar with SBS exchange servers.
The server has been up for months and there has not been an issue. About 3 weeks ago the issue of emails not being sent out of the exchange server started to happen. Now I dug into (limited knowledge) the server and found that the server was configured to go out to an external mail server and pull in a users email (POP3). I am guessing that this could be NDR delivery issue simply because I do not know the configurations or more overly the windows configuration, or could it be something else?

Thank you in advance,

Tahoe

Error messages?

by Churdoo In reply to SBS exchange server not s ...

Do the users get an error message when they attempt to send outbound email? Is this affecting all outbound emails of all users? I doubt this is the case as people would go nuts if not a single email could be sent for 3 weeks. So what else can you say about the frequency of this sending problem?

The POP3 Connector is unrelated to this particular issue, however, the place to look is Server Management / Advanced Management / First Organization (Exchange) / Connectors / SmallBusiness SMTP Connector / Properties / General tab / and see if "forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts" is filled in, and if so, what is the server name or IP in the field directly below this option. This is where to start looking for your sending problem.

If this box is not selected, i.e. "Use DNS to route to each address space on this connector" is selected, then the issue may be related to lack of anti-spam best practices (i.e. SMTP server FQDN supplied in EHLO/HELO not matching DNS lookup for same, and/or missing PTR record and/or SPF record). If this makes you say "Huh?!" then post question back. Also post back more details re: your internet connection / ISP, i.e. T1/DS1, cable broadband, DSL broadband, other, and ISP as the problem may be in intentional block placed by your ISP.

Delayed email message and errors.

by tahoerogue In reply to Error messages?

From one user :"It is with any
outgoing emails to any recipient, however it only happens on occasion.
I will receive a return email message stating the recipient did not
receive the email please contact the administrator. "
Then there are the delayed messages: "This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed."

Error: " Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator.

I believe that the firewall and server configuration are at fault, and that the server is being utilized as as spammer. They have a tz190 firewall and then the SBS server running exchange hosting the company's email.

to configure exchange on SBS

by CG IT In reply to SBS exchange server not s ...

you have to use the connect to the internet wizard. This wizard will setup your Exchange to use POP3 and ehlo along with the user name and password required to log on to the 3rd party pop3 provider.

You need the log on information and the POP3 server name you will be connecting to. I suggest you call your POP3 email provider and get their information and find out whether they are hosting your outbound as well, then run the connect to the internet wizard and follow the wizard instructions.
