The one running after an illegal shutdown is the DOS version of scandisk. The one running from Tools is the Windows version.

Often the DOS version is more thourough and complete. Sometimes scandisk is required to run from the Windows version (especially if you are using long file names since DOS does not know what to do with these).

Anna I think you got that mixed up the windows version is more complete. Dos version just checks to make sure windows will boot up . the windows version checks for all errors and nameing errors and disk space. you have the option of doing a completedisk check or just a file check

Illegal shutdown just checks disk integrity and file structure (standard).

Depending on settings from the start menu you can do the same standard test or a more through test.

DOS version (depending on OS version) actually uses windows, in older OS requires switch settings upon entry.
