Scan disk at every boot up

By teke ·
On a Win Me system it wants to run scan disk every time it boots; even if I let the scan disk complete it will run again at next bootup.

How do I clear this?

Thanks.

Scan disk usually scan your computer only if you shutdown improperly. Click start then shutdown and then wait for the computer to end properly.

As mentioned in my inital question the system was allowed to complete scan disk then at next (normal) startup it scans again.

first answer is usually correct, but I have seen a few set ups where ME will still want to do a scan on every boot, even after a proper shutdown. I found in such cases that after booting you run SCANDISK and DEFRAG and the problem goes away, do thisevery few weeks and it usually does not come back. I suspect that ME views a HDD in need of a good defrag as the same as in need of a good scandisk.

I did try the scandisk and then defrag but no joy.

Microsoft Knowledge Base lists two articles about scandisk running after a normal shutdown.
The resolution is to disable APM (Advanced Power Management) in BIOS (273017) or to install Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache package (29066.

For more information, please refer to

If the above or other answers do notsolve your problem, backup your data and reinstall Windows fresh.

Turning of APM helped. APM seems to cause lots of various "odd" problems. Thanks!
