Scan Disk Problem

By mcarmcpnzn ·
I'd like to know what it means by the statement "Scan disk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable scan disk to finish sooner."? This notice has appeared on both Standard and Thorough scan. I close all programs and lengthen the time of the screen saver whenever I perform this task before going to disk defragmenter. Please explain to me the meaning of this so I will know waht to do. Thank you.

Scan Disk Problem

Whenever another program accesses the hard drive, Scan disk stops, and starts over. There is a counter is Scandisk that stops the program after 10 restarts.

You said you close all programs. Is that just active programs, or everything?
If thereare still Icons in your system tray, you have not closed everything.

Start by closing all of the programs in the System Tray.
Then, use ALT-CTRL-DEL to bring up the close program dialog. There are likely numerous programs running in the background that you are not aware of.
For most systems, you can safely close all of these programs, except explorer.

After scandisk completes, it would aslo be a good time to run defrag.

Re-boot your computer after scandisk / defrag is complete.Another option, is to boot into safe mode, and run scandisk from there, as few of the disk accessing programs are loaded in safe mode.

It means that you have something running in the back ground. This could be an anti virus software. You can turn off the anti virus software and then run scan disk, or you can restart your machine in safe mode and then run scan disk. Safe mode can bereach by pushing the f8 button while your computeris restarting. Hope this helps, Frank

Depending on the programs you have running in the background such as Screen Saver,Anti-Virus Software, memory management software, programs such as these need to be disabled to allow scandisk to perform,You can also increase the time of Power Management, but first note the default times and reset when scandisk is finished
Increasing the time of the screen saver does not help, you need to shut down screen saver during scandisk
