Scandisk after improper shutdown

By mudddawg ·
Is there an easy way to disable the scandisk after a WIN95 computer is improperly shut down? It seems to me that I remember seeing it somewhere but cannot say for sure! TIA

Start>Run msconfig

From the General Tab click advanced. You will find it there.

You could be asking for corrupt registries if you do so.

Yes there is, but I recommend not doing so. This is setup so as to prevent your system from having problems. Disabling it can only eventually lead to a larger problem that you may or may not be able to recover from.

Microsoft did this one correctly....

It may be redundant to say this again, but it is better to leave scandisk alone. You often find errors on hard drives after lockups or power flickers that can cause serious errors to the O/S and even bad sectors on the hard drive. I know it is annoying, but also very useful.

I could be wrong(in fact probably am) but isn't msconfig a win98 util. Also, what I am really looking to do is turn the scandisk on someones pc who does not have it working. I agree that it is important to have running, that is why I am after a fix. TIA

Scandisk after improper shutdown

If Windows 9x is shutdown incorrectly, or the turn power turned off without shuting down, the system will attempt to run Scandisk on the next boot. You can control whether Scandisk doesn't run, prompts whether to run, or runs automatically.

1. Change the attributes for MSDOS.SYS so it is not 'Read Only', MSDOS.SYS is found in the root directory of your C drive. Open the file using Notepad or another text editor (not Microsoft Word or any word processor).

2. Change the value of 'AutoScan=' to:
? AutoScan=0 : Scandisk is Disabled
? AutoScan=1 : Scandisk Prompts First
? AutoScan=2 : Scandisk Runs Automatically

3. Changes will take place on the next reboot.

Note: It is advisable to run Scandisk after an incorrect shutdown to avoid file corruption.

Note: This feature is only available on Windows 95 OSR 2 and greater.
