scandisk runs everytime I boot

By johnk320 ·
I have a HP Pavillion running Win98SE. Everytime I boot it, it runs scandisk. I am shutting it down properly. It is impossible to install new software because when you reboot, as part of the installation process, it never completes the install. Also, it takes a full 5 minutes to boot AFTER running scandisk - pretty slow. Finally, this computer is hooked to a cable modem. I'm told it takes about 10 minutes to load the home page. I'm thinking all this is related. If I can figure out why scandisk keeps running maybe all the rest will fall into place.

BTW, the HP is 500 MHz w/64 MB RAM.

thanks,
JK

Check this MS article for the scandisk problem:

support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q273017

If that doesn't work, boot into safe mode and run scandisk followed by defrag, then restart and see what happens.

Look for IDE Cache fix in windows update:
ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctly (Q273017)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT : This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS
Although Windows may seem to shut down correctly, ScanDisk may run the next time you start the computer.

CAUSE
During the shutdown process, the contents of the virtual cache are written to the destination device. If the destination device isan Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk, data may be written to the hard disk's onboard cache but not to the disk itself. When this occurs, the data is lost from the cache when the computer turns off.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, you can download the Window IDE Hard Drive Cache package from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site at:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
When the Windows Update page is displayed, follow these steps:
Click Product Updates to create the catalog of available updates for your computer.

After the catalog is created, click to select the Window IDE Hard Drive Cache Package check box.

try disabling scandisk by going to your sytem congiguration utility ( start+run type msconfig),& select the advanced button then put a check in the disable scandisk after a bad shutdown.
reboot & see if this helps, you'll now need to run scandisk manually through system tools, when you want to, every 2 to 4 weeks is usually enough

try going into your system configuration utility (start+run & type msconfig), click on the advanced button & check the don't run scandisk on bad shutdown box.
If you do this you'll have to run scandisk through your system tools when you want to useit, at least 2 to 4 weeks is enough.

Did You check to see if scandisk is in the startup folder? Or at the beginning of the Autoexec.bat or config.sys?
