Scanner/Camera Device Install as Unknown

By don ·
Recently, when installing any imaging hardware (i.e. scanner, camera, webcam, etc.) under Windows XP, they have started installing as an "Unknown Device" within the Device Manager instead of under "Imaging Devices".

They also do not show up under the Control Panel "Scanners & Cameras" and the "Add an Imaging Device" wizard no longer does anything.

I have reinstalled the devices numerous times and I have tried fixing my Window's XP install with the original XP install CD. Nothing changes.

Any ideas on what to try next short of wiping the hard disk and starting from scratch??

If what you are installing came with a cd insert and install the files. It might you pick it up and correct itself with the cd.

It could be a deviced that XP does not recognize. Also some types of hardware requires you to install software from thie CD BEFORE you even connect the device.

I agree with the previous poster that you may need to install drivers from a CD or download them first.

Good Luck,

It might be possible that the particular problem could be a compatibility issue. It be best you update windows XP and look for that particular update. There are three seperate possible
compatibilty issues depending on the type of connection your scanner is based on (Eg. serial,USB, etc). It can also help to run defrag if your system's "ADD and imaging device wizard no longer functions correctly. I would take caution when your system is acting a bit sluggish, since it could be a sign of spyware or other malicous code that taking up your system resources and causing problems with your overall system.
