I have a vendor that setup an application on one of our servers. While checking my backup jobs one day I noticed my backup server lost communications with the application server. After investigating why it lost communications I found out that the vendor put in a scheduled tast to automatically reboot the server every evening. When questioning the vendor as to why they would require an automatic reboot I was told that it was standard operating procedures to reboot their servers every night to clear out memory and processes. I’ve been working with Windows sevrers for 15 years and I have never heard of this. The only time I ever heard of rebooting a server like that is if the application has a memory leak or some other issue. The application server is Windows Server 2003 Standard. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. I think the vendor is blowing smoke to hide the fact that his application is not very stable.
