scheduling of automating the restarting

By lois_cc ·
Hi,

Is there anybody who knows the command line that helps to automate the shutting down and restarting of the WinNT server?
It starts with shutdown/ -r .......?? I don't know the full command. Can anybody help? What about the automating of the restarting of WinNT server? I am totally lost on this. Thanks in advance.

You need the NT Resource Kit available on Microsoft's web site. Use the scheduler service on the server. As far as the command just type shutdown /? and it will give you all the options. In the past I have used the force closure of applications, be careful though as it performs an ungraceful shutdown.

Take a look at the resource kit, you might find something there. I gave up long ago. Now, I use something called Autoshutdown

The price is right!

Good luck!

Try this: Load the scheduler service. From a command prompt, AT 00:00 (time) /every:m,t,w,th,f,s,su (or whenever) c:\bounce.cmd (the name of the batch file that you process) Mine looks like this ...

kill /a
msg * Login Disabled - Server Unavailable
net stop spooler
del %windir%\system32\spool\printers\*.* /q
del %windir%\*.tmp
shutdown /reboot

The actuat AT looks like this:

AT 00:30 /every:m,t,w,th,f,s,su c:\bounce.cmd

Make sure the file is a .cmd extension. GOOD LUCK !!!!!

I am assuming you have a UPS connected to your server? Not only do they protect the server from surges and power outages, but they usually come with software that will gracefully down the server in the event the power fails and you are not present to manually shut down the server. The software also usually allows you to schedule automated shutdowns. If you do not have a UPS for your server, I would get one. We use APCs Smart-UPS with our servers, and they come with the software I mentioned.

I have an APC UPS too,, but that only allows for shutdown, (on the models and software that we have on ours) It would probably be better, unless you're there every morning bright and early like I am (unfortunately) to turn everything back on.. you may want to just request the purchase of a full scheduling program...
Good Luck,
Mike Roark
