Can anyone advise as to what is happening here and whether they have seen this before..

First thing you need to do is install SP3. Then, open the recovery console. type FIXMBR and hit enter. This will repair the master boot record (MBR). If this doesn't work, reopen the recovery console, and type FIXBOOT, this will write a new MBR. This should fix your problem nicely. If you still have problems Email me, I'll try to walk you thru troubleshooting.

Good luck!
Joe

Thanks for your advice, trying the recovery console didn't work, i ran pq magic to check the partitions and it told me that the partitions were totally screwed. Fearing the possiblity of bad sectors i ran some pretty exhaustive hard drive utils and then reinstalled W2K from another CD which has now installed correctly and has not exhibited the same kind of behaviour as before.
