Screen Resolution keeps on changing

by luv2bike2 . Updated 16 years, 8 months ago

Compaq Laptop,Persario CQ50, Windows Vista home edition, SP1.

I don’t usually work on Laptops however i am doing a friend a favor. the laptop will connect to the internet wireless if there is wifi around however i don’t have wifi at my office so i can not connect to the internet with the laptop, I believe there is a network card that is enabled as well, however there is an issue with that as well (see below).

The problem is:
The screen resolution (1280 X 800) will change, the screen goes blank, than the screen will be at
800x 600, than bounce back to the 1280X800 it will keep on doing that for a little bit. when the resolution goes to 800×600 a little box at the bottom of the screen comes up Optimal Resolution Notification:
this is not the optimal screen resolution for the primary display device. the optimal resolution is 1280×800. it might stop and than i can do something. sometimes the screen will just black out and than i will have to shut down by pressing the off button. right now the laptop has been on for about 15 minutes and the screen resolution has changed 2 times. it seems to happen when i click on the mouse buttons.

i have checked the display options in control panel and it is set to 1280×800.

I am assuming that it is malware or a virus so i installed and ran Malwarebytes full scan and it found and removed a couple of malwares, rebooted than ran the norton internet secuity suite that my friend bought and it did not find any thing. i can not connect to the internet to see if there are any new updates for norton. the malwarebytes is as current as 9/10/09.

if i plug in a network cable (which is a good cable) to the network card, the screen goes blank and i have to shut the laptop off using the on/off button and restart it without the cable connected.

Does anyone have any ideas that i can try or do to resolve this issue?
Thanks,
