Screen Saver lock up

By rick ·
Has anyone heard of a computer locking up when either the screen saver activates or when you try to enter the screen saver mode to change the settings? Any suggestions?

Screen Saver lock up

I personally do this as part of my shut down & power managemment .
During boot up , press Delete & in the Power Management page , make
sure it is set to Disable .
During install , no screensavers are selected . To remove , there
are many ways. One is to Open up Control Panel , select Add/Remove
Programs & click on Windows Setup . Go down to Accessories & click
on details . Untick Screensavers .
While Control Panel is open , click on System , then Device Manager .
Click on the + next to System devices ( down the bottom ) & if
Power Management ( or a similar name ) is there delete it .
I then setup Power Management the way I like it ( set the screen to
shut 1st & the power later ) I never have any problems . John .

Screen Saver lock up

Screen savers locking up is not an uncommon problem. As jmatt pointed out, it could be a problem with the power management settings. If I understand your description, it sounds like it's locking up as soon as you enter screen saver mode, which is probably before power management is attempting to activate, unless power management has very short timeouts specified. It won't hurt to check the power management settings, and jmatt's technique looks like a pretty good technique.
The other possibilities, then, are video driver conflicts, or a poorly written third-party screensaver product. I, therefore, would check for more recent video drivers, and/or if it is a third-party screen saver product, consider uninstalling or disabling the screen saver and save your resources for doing real work.
Screen savers are an unnecessary resource hog and provide no value-add with today's technology.

I agree that drivers could have been a source of the problem but Diamond drivers for Win 98 were the latest. The screeensaver chosen was from Microsoft as a part of the original Windows 98 SE disk.
