SCSI = Small Computer System Interface. It is an add on card that allows the use of SCSI based hard drives. main difference between SCSI and “normal” IDE is in data transfer rates, # of drives that can be in an array, hotswapability and lenght of data cable.

In the old days when Hard Drive size was measured in megabytes and not gigabytes, SCSI was preferred over IDE because for large database server because one could put a large # of drives together to form one BIG drive [think SCSI drive limit is 17 where IDE is 4 ] due to not having a cable lenght limitation [IDE lenght limitation is 18″].

With the advent of 200+GB IDE drives and Serial ATA controllers with 150mbps transfer rates [well not really 150mbps throughput] SCSI has fallen out of grace with database managers [cost is a factor to as SCSI costs a lot more].

Gods but that reads terrible ::::looking for the bifocals::::

For the technical ins and outs of SCSI ask the CHAS. The jist of my gibberish is that with SCSI you can create one huge drive out of a bunch of small ones, have fast data transfers, and hotswap out failing drives. IDE you couldn’t do that. You were limited to 4 drives being recognizable AND you could only use a 18″ data cable. Pretty hard to string 17 drives together with an 18″ data cable.
