SCSI Backups?

By Foz ·
Hi, i was wondering is this is the norm or have i done something wrong? Im setting up a small backup routine (approx 150GB) to be ran every night, now i have three backup devices (external Benchmark DLT 40/80) connected to a Adaptec AIC 7892 Ultra 160 SCSI card. The software im using is Arcserve 9.0, now what im trying to do is run 3 jobs at the same time but what im finding is that i can only do one at a time. Now im figuring this is because the SCSI card can only handle one data stream at once? is this the case? if so how do i get round it? purchase another 2 SCSI cards and pop them in the same machine? Forgive me if im asking silly questions but hey we all have ot learn from a source and what better than you guys! Thanks a lot!

SCSI Backups?

by timwalsh In reply to SCSI Backups?

What type of device does the data exist on? A single disk or multiple disks? SCSI or IDE disks?

If I'm not mistaken, Arcserve handles queued jobs sequentially. Therefore if you are trying to run 3 jobs from the same software, it will only run one at a time. You would need to run the backups from three different computers, each running the Arcserve software. Also realize that if you are trying to backup data from a single disk (or if single backup jobs span data on multiple disks). Running 3 autonomous backup jobs won't necessarily mean that you can backup your data in one third the time of one backup job unless each job backs up data from a separate disk (or array).

Well the problem seemed to be i needed to set three seperate device groups up in Arcserve, this then ran 3 jobs at once! great! thanks for all your help!
