SCSI Hotswap Backplane

By rigneyma ·
Can a set of drives in a RAID 5 configuration be moved from one physical back plane to another and maintain integrity?

My specific situation entails 4 drives in self contained hot swap canisters (the kind that take up the same space as a CDROM drive). They're connected to a Mylex RAID controller via an ordinary internal LVD "spaghetti string" cable. Can I take the drives out of these bulky canisters and put them into a hot swap backplane such as in the INTEL SC5100 case?

Additionally, is a change in the drive orientation from vertical to horizontal still a concern with modern drives?

Going to a different type of controller most certainly won't work, as they use different low level formats.

If you were going, say, from a Mylex to another, new, Mylex, you'd still be unsuccessful. Basically, the controller knows what drives are part of the current set. If you turn everything off, swap the drives, and bring the system back up, the drives will still be unused, not members of the current set. Perhaps if you had a set with the same number of drives in the same bays on the target controller BEFORE you swap in the 4 drives, then it might work - I honestly don't know.

A change in orientation shouldn't matter - supposing you are not flipping or throwing the thing around while the drive is spinning :-)

I wouldn't be changing controllers. I'd be changing the hot swap interface from canisters to the back plane in a case such as the INTEL SC5100. Is the controller aware of a hot swap interface , or does it only see the drives?
