Search crashes Explorer

By p.j.hutchison ·
We have a number of Windows 2003 Servers with SP1 installed.
At present, we cannot use the Search for Files and Folders features as it causes Explorer to crash and reload. No error messages or given.
There are no relevant Microsoft KB articles about it or patches.
Most servers have McAfee VirusScan 8, Office, Acrobat Readers etc. Any ideas?

how often is McAfee updated? All of the servers behave the same? Check for updates with McAfee, Office, and other installed software. Are there antispyware packages installed? Create a 'test' server and install the same things, see if it happens on that one, if so you can troubleshoot that problem by removing some software and testing it. Something is causing the problem, and I would assume that it was AV, AS, or some monitoring software or utility that is being used on these servers.

Servers are updated daily, all servers have AV software, only a handful are affected.

I have experienced the same problem. I know the source is McAfee. I have 8.0 as well along with an EPO Agent. When I uninstall McAfee, the search function works. I have loaded an OS multiple times and get the same result. The OS that I am running is XP Professional. I am trying to build a close to error-free image.I have researched numerous forums yet I still can't find a solution. I will continue to bang my head.

ITs possible but most of our servers have McAfee and they work fine. Its just a handful, I'm beginning to think its an MS Office 2000 (which adds some search stuff itself). A Office SP may fix it.

Try to update your IE or try using Mozilla Firefox.

They have IE 6 SP1 already and Firefox is a no-no.

McAfee 8.0 is the reason my PC was crashing

by larting.you In reply to Search crashes Explorer

I removed this... McAfee 8.0 is more and more its own form of malware... I'll be so glad when MS does security the right way so we won't have to be slaves to 3rd party AV solutions that do wierd things like this.

In the mean time, I've downloaded and installed the free AVG 7.1 (it got good ratings as a free AV software).

Register these files either via run command or create a batch file to run all three.

regsvr32 wshom.ocx
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
