Search files & folder nothing happens

By claude102 ·
I have a user running Windows 2000. He is experiencing all sorts of IE6 browser problems but on top of this the Start>Search>Files & Folders feature no longer works; that is, the dialog box does not open. The system seems to lock up for a few seconds (about the time it would normally take to open the dialog box).

Hi

I would try repairing/reinstalling I.E. to see if this restores your browser functionality.

With regards to the search tool not being available have you tried running a registry checker/repair tool?

Microsoft has this on the search feature not working properly:

Good luck

Sounds like a virus or, more probably, adware/spyware/malware search trojan that has infected the machine. First thing would be to do a complete virus scan with up-to-date definitions and then, if no virus is found, download and run a couple of the spyware/adware/malware removal tools like Lavasoft AdAware, Spybot, HijackThis, etc.

Hope this helps!

I just encountered this same problem with a client whose laptop exhibited the same symptoms. He had been infected with numerous virus and trojans.I ended up just reinstalling. Trying to track the problem became a nightmare. I just read the MS knowlege base article that black currant suggested and I would have tried that first.
