Second partition D: drive suddenly cannot be accessed.

by martnewn . Updated 16 years ago

I run Windows XP SP2 and I save all my data in the second partition, d: drive. Suddenly I cannot access this d: drive any longer. I checked in Windows Explorer, and although D: drive is shown as the local disk (D:), but the capacity is “unknown”.

When I click on the D: drive, there was a long pause followed by an error message ” The disk in drive D: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?” How could the partition not be formatted when it is already in use for years.

A check on Disk Management showed the “capacity” and “free space” + “healthy status” but the file system was “blank”. Further info on Disk O as follows:
Volume (C:) Partition; Basic; NTFS; Healthy (System) 29.29GB; 18.32GB Free space.
Volume (D:) Partition; Basic; “Blank”; Healthy; 45.23GB; 45.23GB Free space.

How can I recover my data from (D:) drive?

Thank you.
