Second Partition in Windows XP

By p.barns ·
Hi. I have had this problem a few months ago last time I re-installed my OS but now having just formatted my Windows partition again, the same has occurred and I cannot remember how to fix it!

The story is:

1. When windows is being installed and asks which drive you would like it to be installed to, it finds the second partition and the correct free space details of it etc.

2. An external cd run from boot program (Acronis Disk Director) will find the partition and show that it has files on it and the appropriate free space.

3. When windows is loaded and I look in my computer or disk management... there is a partition but a completely free one that has no file system!

As I say I solved this problem before after many days and I think it was just pure luck but I have no idea once again!

Thanks for your help, in advance!

P.S. Do you think this might have something to do with the RAID drivers at all?

Partition types

by p.j.hutchison In reply to Second Partition in Windo ...

It could be the wrong partition type. When you created a new partition, did you create a:
1. A Primary partition, or
2. An Extended partition with a logical partition in it.

If installing windows it has to be a Primary partition to be able to boot from it. If its a extended one, it might get corrupted as its the wrong type to install Windows.

As for the RAID drives, if it the wrong ones then either RAID does not work at all or you get stability problems, unlikely, but possible.
