    Secondary IDE Devices not working

    by jhook ·

    After loading Easy CD Creator 4 by Adaptec in Windows 2000 and restarting, I received an error something to the effect of ?could not finish the set up, edit the registry manually?? When I pulled up Windows Explorer I noticed that BOTH my CD/DVD ROMand my CDRW drive were gone. When I looked in device manager, both devices had the yellow exclamation point indicating a problem. Looking at the properties of the devices the status stated, ?This device is not working properly because Windows cannotload the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)?

    Also, the event Viewer shows an interesting message quite a few times,
    ?The Cdralw2k service failed to start due to the following error:
    The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.?
    Too far gone for ?Last known good??
    I have uninstalled and reinstalled the malfunctioning devices every way I could imagine. I ?updated? the drivers for the Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller. I even uninstalled the Secondary IDE Controller and rebooted to see if it would come back with some ?children? (my TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1202 and my PHILIPS PCRW804 CDRW Drive). All of the ?updating? was done using only the driversprovided by the operating system. I haven?t had too much luck finding drivers in the web.

    Does anyone have any ideas (besides reinstalling Windows)? I would rather turn one screw that yank the whole engine. Thanks!!!

      It seems like I’ve asked alot of questions in this one, I really only asked one. The text editor seems to have changed all my quotation marks to question marks. I hope it’s not too confusing.

      Have you downloaded and installed the appropriate updates from http://www.roxio.com ?
      Adaptec spun them off for the CD software last year.

      This link;
      http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_software_updatesv4.jhtml

      List some interesting updates, including a bug if IE 5.5 or later is installed.
      Note: remove any spaces from the pasted link.

      If you are installing the OEM package, I recommend updating to version 5 retail.

      Did you have other CD recording software installed prior to Easy CD?

      If so, “remnants” of the old software may be the problem.
      You need to “eradicate” the old software before installing new CD software.
      (Ahead has a utility for Nero users to “dual boot” Nero and several other CD recorders!)

        Thanks for the response! Well I downloaded the updates, I installed one to go 4.0 to 4.5, however, the Direct CD Update requires a CDROM drive. Looks like a catch 22 for that one. I know what you mean about “residual software”, but this is all I have. About going to version 5, I guess I could do that, but I’m thinking if 4.0 worked before on my 2000 machine, it should continue. I’m thinking I mucked something up.

        Thanks again. (check out my latest comment, maybe that will shed some light on this puppy.)

      Remove the whole IDE assembly in the os (ie. remove everything!) than let it boot.
      Also, look for some patches from the burner software. If you kinda get what I mean, you
      will know what I mean

        Removed the entire IDE assembly in the OS. It reinstalled fine, but still have exclamation points on my CDRW and CD/DVD. Thanks for the advice though!

      This sounds more hardware related than software. Check your BIOS setup to ensure that the Secondary IDE controller is ENABLED. If it is enabled, then slave either your burner or your DVD to the master on the Primary IDE channel and see if either comes up. If both are recognized by the PC, then perhaps you have an issue I encountered with my Yamaha burner and Mitsumi CD-ROM. I was forced to slave my CD to my Primary HDD then master the burner on the Secondary Channel.

      Roxio has Version 5 of CD Creator now, you may want to also consider upgrading to that. I suspect, however, it is device orientation as described above. It is very possible you have device conflicts like that.

      Hope this helps!!

        In light of your clarification, I would recommend full removal of EZ-CD Creator when logged in as Administrator, reboot, log into the Admin account, delete the directory if still present, empty your Recycle bin, then edit the registry accordingly. PCMag.com has a nifty little util called Regcleaner. Download that and run. Remove all entries to EZ-CD Creator. Reboot and log in again as Admin, reinstall (perhaps a more current version, 5.2), reboot, and make sure you log in as Admin. Multipleusers on the same machine can get confusing if you use any of them aside from yours, so take each step methodically. It’s a simple mistake but as you can see it causes a lot of headache. Hope this works! 🙂

        Good luck.

      You probably need to uninstall EZ CD creator if you can, and delete two keys in your registry; delete the “UpperFilters” value in this key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

      and delete the “LowerFilters” value in this key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

      Then reboot and reinstall EZ CD Creator if you like and everything should work.
      Tell me if that works, g’luck.

        This was what I initially looking for, but, alas! I got a stop error on the reboot (BSD!!!) I had to do a “Last known Good” to get me back to my desktop. Maybe my comment above may help out a bit.

      Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

      NOTE : If you are getting a code 39 message, it may be that additional third-party filter drivers were added to UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in addition to Adaptec filter drivers. In that case, you may try to remove the non-Adaptec filter drivers first, leaving the Easy Creator filters in place to see if the Code 39 goes away. If you still receive an error code 39, 32, or 31 message, remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely in the preceding key.

      Restart your computer.

      Method Two
      If the above method does notresolve the code 31 error message and restore access to your CD-ROMs, if you also have Media Player version 7.0 installed, you can uninstall Media player version 7.0 and download and install the latest release posted at the following Microsoft Web site:
      http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia

      UpperFilters or LowerFilters registry values by either adding their filter drivers or by removing the registry keys and values outlined in this article that start with:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

      WARNING : Ensure you perform a backup of your registry before you make any changes.

      There is also a patech for easy CD Creator and Windows 2000 here. You may want to run this during the next install.

      You failed to say if both devices were recognized prior to installing “Easy CD Creator?” (Yes/NO)

      (Yes) -> Uninstall the CD/RW software. Reboot (We are talking about Microsoft here). Deactivate all unnecessary software, such as anti-viruses, internet streaming connections, Gator, Comet Cursor, and so forth. Reinstall the CD/RW software. Reboot. If the same problem occurs update the CD/RW software.

      (No) -> (1) Are both drives using the same drive letter? (2) Be sure the CD/DVD and the CD/RW are on the same IDE interface – I suggest IDE(1). Your harddrive should be on IDE(0). Check for master/slave jumpering, and cable location connection (What he heck, why not place the master/slave’s on their respective cable connections). If this does not allow both drives to be recognized the’re may be an interupt conflict (IRQ). If so find it and write it down. Shutdown the PC. Now bring the PC up into the BIOS settings screen. There may be a setting for “Reserved” settings (usually with-in the “Plug/Play” section. Reserve the IRQ in question. Reboot. You may have to do this part several times to find the right IRQ sequence.

      I’d like to clarify the steps I went through before my Drive Woes. The PC in question was once a multi-boot system with 95, NT4(later wiped to make some space), and 2000. (What can I say, I was studying for my ever elusive MCSE Cerification,) Anyway, I mostly logged into the 2000 partition. Even with 2 additional OS partions everything worked fine (really). Recently I blew away everything and did a fresh install without multiple partions. No hithes there either. Here’s where it gets dicey. I have another user at home who logs on with limited permissions. Rebooting after the Adaptec software install, I logged in, (I think foolishly), using the login of the limited user. Thats when I got the error indicating there was something wrong with the install. I logged back in as administrator and bang the devices seemed “half installed”. Thats why I don’t think this is a hardware issue as much as a screwup in the registry. I wonder if this helps shed some light on my dilemma.

      Thanks for youradvice!

      A few things that you may not have already done:

      1. Reset the BIOS to default setting (or/and Clear CMOS).
      -If device not detected in bios, change device from ide cable (check if cable ok)
      -If not detected, place it back and invert the ide cable on the motherboard (check if MBD ide port ok)
      2. Install service Pack 2 from the Microsoft website.
      3. In safe mode, delete the IDE ports and restart to let the computer detect the device by itself.

      no other idea for the moment

      You know Joe, I understand a good bit more after reading your second “comment”, and I would say that when you did the required reboot at the end of the Adaptec software install, and did not login as the adminstrator it did indeed cause the finalization of the software installation to be placed in a different registry key location.

      With that mouthful said, if you login as the adminstrator and attempt an uninstall of the Adaptec software it should yield an error of not being able to locate allsources.

      The short of it is –
      From within Regedit do a search for “Easy CD” creator, and delete all entries. I would also suggest doing the same within Regdt32.
      Now reboot. Reinstall the Easy CD Creator being careful to login as the administrator completely through the install process.

      Good luck

      Uninstall the Easy CD Creator software

      Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

      Go to the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Security
      Remove the file called Etetnt.mpd; it has a revision date of 1997.

      Go to the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

      Remove the following files:

      Cdr4vsd
      Cdralw2k
      Cdr4_2k
      Cdudf

      Thanks for all the input. I think I have to rule out a hardware problem because I finally gave up and backed my data to a network share and reinstalled from scratch. All devices are working now. I feel somewhat disappointed though. I’m sure you all know the frustration. I had to blow away everything just because I couldn’t solve a seemingly simple problem.
      Thanks again!
