Most webcams over $30 nowadays have a built-in microphone. I just bought one 2 weeks ago, and that was the problem for me, acutally. I already have a good soundcard with microphone, but I needed a webcam.
And I picked up one from GE that had the mic also. I had a hellish time trying to disable the mic on the webcam, and only get my existing mic to work.
I finally gave up (it wasn't worth the trouble), so I took the GE camera back and searched at 3 stores for a decent camera WITHOUT a mic.
I finally found one from Creative that was camera only, for $29.99.
But all of the other ones -- a nicer one from Creative, Logitech, others -- all were webcams with built-in mics.
So, just go to Best Buy or Comp USA and look at the cameras over $30 in cost.
Now, the Creative camera I picked up does have a motion-detection system on it, so it can be used as a motion detector/video recorded. The model from Creative with the mic also has this functionality. So, maybe look for the Creative webcams.
That might work for your boss.

hope this helps

humm Joe has some pretty cool ideas. What I did was fiddle around with a software program from Hidden Camera Solutions, some Swann cameras, and a TV capture card from Pinnacle Studios. It works. Saves video to the hard drive and the hidden Camera Solutions software can be programed to start, stop, whenever or go with the motion detection. With the TV Capture card, all that's needed for the camera to work is that it has a RCA jack. The mic plugs into the input port on the sound card. Was going to try wireless instead of wired but haven't gotten there yet.

Now if they only made thermal imagining cameras we can use!!!!!
