Security Center shows 2 Antivirus apps

By kedia990 ·
When i first installed Windows on my new machine, i decided to install Norton Internet Security 2006 (15-day trial version) and check it out. Installed. The trouble started when i restarted my PC. NIS 2006 wouldnt execute, and as a result, i couldnt login as a supervisor in NIS 06.

Great, i thought. Try as I might, i couldnt get it to load. okay then, what is to be done, has to be done. i decided to uninstall it. But when i went to add/remove programs, it said i couldnt uninstall NIS 2006 as I had not logged on with a supervisor account. So, i went into safe mode and attempted an uninstall. It said NIS 06 cannot run in Safe Mode. So no running, no uninstall. Finally, i resorted to deleting the program folders and manually removing it's registry entries. Even that wouldn't work!! The files were write protected!

Frustrated, I went to the Symantec website. Fortunately, they had provided a removal utility for the security suite (!!!) -- SymNRT. Downloaded it, Ran it. It removed NIS 06 Program Folders, and I guess, the registry entries too.

Then i decided to use my old security suite - Zone Labs Security Suite. Installed it, working fine.

However, even now, the Windows Security Center detects more than one antivirus application installed, and does not alert me when definitions are out of date, or when the security is turned off. What am I to do for this? Running Windows XP Service Pack 2. Please Help.

Try this...

Start -> Run and type in "regedit"

Browse to branch "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring"

Expand that branch, and you should see the AntiVirus programs that it is supposed to be monitoring. Delete Norton, and you should be good to go.
