Security Concerns with Chatting

By ddsdax ·
I am a network administrator for a large company. Recently there has been a concern about chat programs, such as AOL's IM MSN Messenger, on the users computers and the security risks involved with hackers. Could you shed some light on the subject for me on the "actual" security concerns that I should look at?
I would really appreciate it.

Security Concerns with Chatting

I'm not entirely sure waht your looking for but I do know there are a good deal of scrpts out there to "hack" thru AOL IM.
Most of what I've seen out there is IP Sniffers.

Also if your not familiar with AOL IM, there is an option where you can directly connect with other users to send and recive files, so Im sure that's an added security risk.

What I would suggest is to have your users run the Java version of AOL IM while at work. Instead of the desktop version.

Hope this helped some,

Along with AOL's IM, be extremely careful of IRQ. If you want a good scare, go to IRQ's home page ( www.mirbalis.com (sp?) ) and read their sercurity issues section.

These programs are opening a direct tcp/ip link to workstations and with that open, there is a lot of damage that could be done.

Also check for the presence of spyware software from these programs. For another scare, go to grc.com .

good luck
