Security Patching Neglected Remote Servers.

By Bizzo ·
I've been tasked with applying security patches to 12 servers. They're a mixture of Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003. I have no information on service pack levels.

All the servers are on a private network with no internet access. Some are in a domain, some are in workgroups. I am able to copy files to the servers from a machine I have physical access to. I have no physical access to any of the servers.

According to the documentation, the last time these servers were patched was September 2006! The newest patch on both 2000 and 2003 servers is MS06-053, so there's going to be quite a few to apply.

The question is, how can I download every security patch from Oct 06 onwards for both these OS's?

I could download the monthly ISOs from MS, and just copy the patches I need. Or I could run MBSA (or whatever the new version's called) for each type of server, export the report and download the patches singly. Or if anyone has any better ideas?

Thanks all.

Andy.

Well this isn't going to be nice

But go to M$'s download center select the OS and then sort by date and download all Hot fixes/Patches that have been released since October 2006. Depending on what you have available to work with you may need to copy these to a USB Stick or something so you can have ready access to them. But no matter what you use I would have one List of Files for Server 2000 and one for Server 2003 so that the downloads don't get mixed up and cause problems.

Not the most elegant way to work but under the limits of this question it's about all you have available.

Good Luck I think you're going to need it as this will be time consuming. :0

Unfortunately that's what I thought. I suppose I was hoping someone knew of a quick and easy way. Luckily, I haven't been given any tight deadlines for this.
