Seeking Advice for a parent in IT Support

by elvishspacecadet . Updated 18 years, 4 months ago

My dad is in a difficult situation and is too depressed and stubborn to ask outright for help. I’m hoping someone out there will have some advice.

My dad does IT Support, he worked for a company for twenty years. The company went bankrupt and he was laid off. He spent almost six months finding a new job for less pay at another company. It was a pretty crappy place, the ran him ragged and then the stock took a little dive. He got laid off again. Six months, al the money reserves are gone. He’s trying to support a disabled wife and no one will hire hime. The big issues are:

1. He’s mid-50s and looks it. Every place that he’s interviewed at didn’t have a single person over 30.

2. He got into computers back in the day when you didn’t really need a degree to get a decent job. A bad expierience at school convinced him to never go to college. Now, he’s trying to compete with people who have Masters.

Does he have any options? Any ideas how to advertise himself a little better? What jobs might he be suited for that could pay enough and won’t mind his lack of degree?

And no, taking any old job won’t work. It has to have full benefits and reasonable pay because of mom. Minimum wage won’t even cut it.
