Self Employment. A way into IT ??

by eujay . Updated 25 years, 1 month ago

My goal is to get a good job in Networking and PC support. I’m attracted by the seemingly good money thta IT jobs pay and by teh fact that I have always had a “feel for computers”. I am A+ certified and have about three years HP Unix experience. In my current job I troubleshoot test jigs in a factory that repairs hardware on broken HP workstations. I do a little bit of networking but not very much. I also have about four years PC support experience but that was at the time when Win 95 was the latest greatest thing. After that I went in a different direction for a while.

For years I have been messing about with computers and I am the person people come to with their PC problems.

I read in these pages and others that experience is the way to get into IT jobs. I am applying for jobs but so far no-one has bit. My location is Sacramento in Northern California.

So my question is. Is self employment a way to get the experience I need to get hired in an IT job ?

I’m thinking of going self employed on a part time basis. This would be an evening and weekend job fixing people’s PC’s doing hardware and software, solving problems, installing stuff, upgrading, repairing, working with web pages and doing whatever needs to be done.
Has anybody out there got into IT by this route ? Does anyone have any advice or help they can give me with this ?

Thanks
